The continued Energy security of India in the face of depletion of fossil fuel, adverse environmental impact on health and the problem of global warming causing climate change, compels us to embark on a path of reducing dependence on fossil fuel and increasing usage of clean Renewable Energy. India’s journey on this path is expected to take several decades to arrive at zero fossil fuel scenario and the Energy industries in the mean time would operate on baskets of Energy Technologies involving both conventional and non-conventional Energy.

Educational Institutes face the twin challenges of generating manpower with easy mobility between the baskets of Energy Technologies in an Energy industry and also, meeting the technical challenges associated with the transition in the Energy scenario.

IIT Mandi has focused on Energy as a thrust area in teaching and research. The teaching curriculums have been introduced at the master’s level in the broad area of Energy, spanning both conventional and non-conventional Energy sources with emphasis on design, implementation and effective utilization of available Energy resources. A Centre for Energy research is being set-up to develop fossil fuel free zones in the hills by developing transport network based on fossil fuel free vehicles, retrofitting of existing vehicles to fossil fuel free technology, Electrical Energy storage technologies etc.

The School of Engineering has developed two curriculums of M. Tech. in consultation with Energy Industries.

The Masters level program of M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Energy Systems will attempt to train the students about mechanical engineering aspects of Energy Systems including both conventional and emerging technology systems. M. Tech. in Energy Engineering with specialization in Energy aims to prepare the students for the materials challenges involved in the emerging energy technologies.

Other than introducing energy courses, IIT Mandi, is working towards various research on energy technologies and climate. Students interested in a future in energy research and technology studies in energy sector can explore these courses.
